Month* ago tha oounty au thoritias agreed with tha Virginia authorities that the Mount Airy Low yap road would ba the naxt road : asked to he put upon the state sys tem if Virginia would build an im proved road from Galax to the state line. This they are now doing, hav ing rocked all the road except about ona mite, and they confidently expect to get it on the state system this year. For us ta fall to insist that the state of North Carolina take over the link in our state would be breaking faith with our neighbors to the north. 2nd. This propoaad state highway is Uw most important road in tha county not now on tha state system, J as evidenced by the fact that sixteen' (IS) county maintained roads lead Into It from other parte of the coun ty and act aa feeders to it. From ob servation and from actual traffic census it la a matter of general knowledge that this road in ite pres.! ent condition without doubt carries the heaviest vehicular traffic of any road maintained by tha county. 3rd. The townships traversed by thia road repreeeat a population of 1M4S, being Just a Uttla short a1 one-half the population of the entirs county. (1990 census). 4th. The taxable wealth, aa tecur ad from the 1927 county tax books, of tha townships that will be served by thia road amounts to S18,190,4&2. or to be exact only *67,000 short of one-half the entire taxable valuation of Surry County. 6th.
